A flotilla of ten boats carrying activists from 22 countries is set to arrive in Gaza towards the end of June, 2011 carrying everything from letters of sympathy to humanitarian aid in an attempt to breach the Egyptian-Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip. The Freedom Flotilla II echoes the path the first Freedom Flotilla took in May 2010, which was attacked and boarded by Israeli naval commandos in international water before it reached Gaza. The attack resulted in the death of nine civilians and strained Israeli-Turkish relations.
