A protest movement in Beirut, Lebanon calling itself “You Stink” has been formed in reaction to the garbage crisis faced by the city. The crisis began when the government closed the Beirut’s main landfill without providing an alternative, resulting in no garbage collection and trash-strewn city streets. Protest participants see the garbage issue as simply one of many plaguing Lebanon’s power-sharing government, where corruption runs rampant and sectarianism often results in parliamentary paralysis. Following a violent crackdown on protests, demonstrators are calling for the resignation of Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam.
