15 youth activists, community organizations, and bloggers currently sit in Vietnam's jail cells. Starting on July 30, 2011 they were rounded up without a warrant, held incommunicado, and denied access to legal representation. Their "crimes:" advocating for social justice in Vietnam.
Their story is all too common and too muted from the public's consciousness. In the last decade, the government of Vietnam has stepped up their crackdown on peaceful dissent, relying on rule by law to criminalize basic rights. Vague national security laws are used to silence writers and bloggers, police abductions have become the norm.
