Saudi Intervention in Yemen

More Info
Following the Houthi overthrow of the Saudi-backed government of Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi in 2015, Yemen has been subject to Saudi Arabian-led military intervention. Saudi Arabia leads a coalition of nine Arab states supported by the US and Britain which seek to influence the outcome of the Yemeni civil war and reinstate the Hadi government, employing tactics such as airstrikes and naval blockades. The intervention has caused the deaths of over 2,280 Yemeni civilians and over 500 Saudi civilians on the Saudi-Yemen border. The situation has been decried by the top UN humanitarian official as a “humanitarian catastrophe” rife with displacement, food and medicine insecurity, and the destruction of civilian infrastructure. An estimated 21.2 million people in Yemen are in need of humanitarian aid.
