Part of the struggle of the opposition in Iran is the struggle for religious freedom. In Iran, Islam (Shi'i) is the state religion, with Christianity, Zoroastrianism, and Judaism being the only other religions recognized. Although tolerated, followers have been harassed by state police, monitored, and denied basic state services. Religions such as the Bahá'í faith are completely unrecognized and its followers are heavily persecuted in Iran. Followers are systematically denied entry into schools, are not allowed burial ground for their deceased, and are often arrested based on spurious charges of "propaganda against the regime" and espionage for foreign powers.
