Police Brutality in Angola
In Angola, an epidemic of police violence has been escalating. Crackdowns on peaceful demonstrations have resulted in unlawful arrests and disappearances. Activist groups and journalists are targeted for demanding social justice in the oil-rich country, where many residents live in poverty. Street vendors are routinely extorted and mistreated in "removal operations" for trying to sell their wares on Angolan streets. Human rights organizations have compiled reports of numerous abuses by police, including beatings, deaths in custody, and extrajudicial executions.
