LGBT Rights in Uganda

In addition to facing widespread societal stigma, LGBT people in Uganda experience extreme persecution by authorities. Incitement against queers is rife among Ugandan religious leaders, politicians vying for popularity and the press, which describe homosexuality as "un-African" and a threat to the traditional values of society. Homosexuality is illegal in Uganda and currently punishable by up to life in prison. A recent anti-homosexuality bill that was introduced to the Ugandan parliament with the backing of American Evangelical Christians stipulates even harsher penalties for homosexuality, including the death sentence for repeat "offenders". More
