Indigenous Brazilians Protest Land Rights Bill
More Info
On May 2, 2013, hundreds of aboriginal Brazilians interrupted Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies meeting which was to discuss a bill that would give National Congress jurisdiction over territorial claims. Indigenous Brazilians fear that this bill will give Brazil’s rural ranchers an upper hand on matters regarding land demarcation. On May 3, the Chamber of Deputies decided to put a six-month hold on the discussion of the amendment and plans on forming a group which will focus on the indigenous’ needs.
