Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo
More Info
On March 24, 1976, the Argentine army ousted the government in a military coup. Political repression, including forced disappearance, became a common occurrence. Some 30,000 people were affected by the practice, including hundreds of kidnapped children taken along with their parents, or those born in clandestine detention centers. The children were taken in by military families, abandoned, sold, or left in institutes without names, depriving them of a connection to their legitimate relatives. The Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo is an organization that aims to locate these abducted children and reunite them with their families, seeks justice for those responsible, and works for the creation of conditions so a similar violation of the rights of children as a result of political repression never occurs again.
