Corruption in Mexico
From 2008 to 2014, Mexico has fallen 31 positions in the ranking of countries on the Corruption Perceptions Index. In Mexico, only two percent of corruption offenses are punished, and those held responsible are always lower-level government officials. In addition, of 444 complaints filed by the Superior Audit of the Federation from 1998 to 2012, only seven were officially recorded (1.5%). In addition to the impunity of public servants, drug cartels and organized crime also have a corrupting effect on government and society. Corruption in Mexico affects the perception of aspects and values of society, such as basic freedoms and human rights.
