Anti-NATO Protests in Montenegro

Several thousand protesters have taken to the streets of the Montenegrin capital of Podgorica to demand regime change in the small Balkan nation of Montenegro and the cessation of government steps towards NATO membership. The demonstrations in the city center were organized the by ex-Yugoslav republic opposition bloc known as the Democratic Front, calling for the ouster of Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and for the installation of an interim government until “genuine elections” can be held. Prime Minister Djukanovic has held power in the country since the mid-1990s. Opposition leaders have voiced their intention to keep pressure on the government until their demands are met, despite violent clashes between police and demonstrators.
